So complicated, yet so simple, love is the eternal conundrum. We are shown fantasies by the media. Fed the mythology of romantic love – pure, sacred and perfect. Certain that we will find it and so we discard anything that falls short. But are we not fools? blinded by utopian dreams? Of course, true romantic love is precious, but is it the only path? Consider the odds. We live in an interconnected world of billions. We have sophisticated communication systems. Websites with algorithms that sift through countless profiles. Yet divorce is rampant and many remain single or try and fail countless relationships. Each new lover found is explored, evaluated and discarded for not measuring up. How could our ancestors, who lived only in small townships with very limited options have more success? Did they settle for the only option in the village and just accept a loveless life? Or did they have a different concept? It is suggested that two, reasonable and considerate people can simply choose to love. Many cultures had arranged marriages – generations were paired off, settled down and raised families - and society did not implode. If each allow the other to be flawed and broken, to be strange, or dull, or awkward, or to fail in many ways, yet accept them - then perhaps their bond, with time, emerges stronger than any Hollywood fairy tale.
